REQUIMENTS OF HANDRAILS

BNBC-2012:
PART-4, CHAPTER-3- MEANS OF EGRESS---HANDRAILS:
3.10.4 Handrails height on stair shall be not less than 860mm (33.86 inch) and not more than 960mm (37.80 inch) above the surface of the tread (footstep/a person’s manner of walking), measured vertically from the top of the rail to the outer edge of the tread. Peripheral diameter of Circular cross section of a handrail shall not be less than 32mm (1.26 inch) and not more than 50mm (1.97 inch). Any other shape with perimeter dimension of not less than 102mm (4.016 inch), but not more than 159mm (6.26 inch) and with the largest cross-sectional dimension not more than 57mm (2.24 inch) shall be permitted provided that all edges are rounded
3.10.8 Stairways shall have continuous guards on both side along the direction of travel and a continuous handrail shall be provided with inner edge guard. A stair of width more than 1118 mm but not more than 2236 mm shall have guards and handrails on both of the edges. Inner edge handrails shall be continuous and outer edge handrails shall be along the flights extended up to one tread depth on both the landings. A stair the width exceeds 2236 mm; intermediate handrails shall be installed with similar length of outer edge handrail. Single traffic lane shall be calculated 559 mm in the stairway and two traffic lanes shall be 1118 mm. Widths of stairs shall be multiple of two traffic lane other than width specified in the Table 4.3.6.
ALLIANCE AND ACCORD—HANDRAILS:
6.9.2.4 Handrails. Handrails shall be provided on both sides of each stairway. Intermediate handrails shall be provided when the stair width exceeds 2.2 m (87 in.).
6.9.2.5 Guards. Guards shall be provided in stairs in accordance with 6.12.2.
6.9.3 Signs.
6.9.3.1 Stair designation signs shall be provided at each floor entrance from the stair to the floor in English and Bengali. Signs shall indicate the name of the stair and the floor level. Signs shall be posted adjacent to the door.
6.12 Handrails and Guards.
6.12.1 Handrails.
6.12.1.1 New handrails shall have a minimum height of 865 mm (34 in.) and a maximum height of 965 mm (38 in.) as measured from the leading edge of the tread.
6.12.1.2 Existing handrails that are less than 760 mm (30 in.) or greater than 1100 mm (44 in.) as measured from the leading edge of the tread, shall be replaced with handrails meeting the requirements of 6.12.1.1.
6.12.2 Guards. Guards shall be provided at all open sides of means of egress that exceed 760 mm (30 in.) above the floor or finished ground below.
6.12.2.1 New guards shall have a minimum height of 1067 mm (42 in.).
6.12.2.2 Existing guards shall have a minimum height of 760 mm (30 in.).
6.12.2.3 Open guards shall have intermediate rails or pattern such that a sphere 200 mm (8 in.) in diameter cannot pass through any opening up to a height of 865 mm (34 in.).
6.12.2.4 Roofs. All occupiable roofs shall be provided with parapets or guards with a minimum height of 1067mm (42 in.).
NFPA 101 (LIFE SAFETY CODE):
7.2.2.4 Guards and Handrails.
7.2.2.4.1 Handrails.
7.2.2.4.1.1 Stairs and ramps shall have handrails on both sides, unless otherwise permitted in 7.2.2.4.1.5 or 7.2.2.4.1.6.
7.2.2.4.1.2 In addition to the handrails required at the sides of stairs by 7.2.2.4.1.1, the following provisions shall apply:
(1) For new stairs exceeding 6 ft 3 in. (1905 mm) in width, handrails shall be provided within 30 in. (760 mm) of all portions of the required egress width.
(2) For existing stairs, handrails shall be provided within 44 in. (1120 mm) of all portions of the required egress width.
7.2.2.4.1.3 Where new intermediate handrails are provided in accordance with 7.2.2.4.1.2, the minimum clear width between handrails shall be 20 in. (510 mm).
7.2.2.4.1.41:* The required egress width shall be provided along the natural path of travel.
7.2.2.4.1.5 If a single step or a ramp is part of a curb that separates a sidewalk from a vehicular way, it shall not be required to have a handrail.
